Inverted Nipple Correction SF Bay Area

Around 2 to 10% of women have inverted nipples. Some women feel insecure about their presence, but inverted nipple correction surgery offers a solution.

What is an Inverted Nipple Correction

The only way to permanently correct inverted nipples is through inverted nipple correction surgery. Inverted nipple correction is a procedure that projects the nipples out, amending the inversion and improving the appearance of the breasts. Inverted nipples can be caused either at birth or, more rarely, by an event later in life, sometimes even by breast cancer.

There are three types of nipple inversion:

  • Grade 1: You can pull out the nipple, and it stays outward for a time
  • Grade 2: You find it more challenging to pull out the nipple, and it goes back in place after pulling it
  • Grade 3: You have a very difficult time with pulling out the nipple entirely

Regardless of the grade of nipple inversion, Dr. Rankin can correct it.

Learn More About Inverted Nipple Correction

Inverted nipple correction is an outpatient surgery, so you will be able to return home the same day. There are three types of inverted nipple correction:

Partial Preservation of the Milk Ducts

After an anesthesiologist uses local anesthesia, Dr. Rankin will make an incision at the base of your nipple and lift both the nipple and areola. He will then suture the nipples to protrude outwards and apply bandages. This type of nipple correction will preserve some of the milk ducts. The milk ducts that are partially preserved can help women breastfeed more easily.

Detached Milk Ducts

The standard procedure for inverted nipple correction detaches the milk ducts entirely. We must note that this permanently prevents the ability to breastfeed. Like the partial preservation of the milk ducts, local anesthesia will be administered, and Dr. Rankin will make an incision at the base of the nipple. He will then detach the milk ducts so the nipples can have a projected shape.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation can also correct some forms of inverted nipples. The implant sits behind the breast tissue or the chest muscle and will help to push the nipple into a nice, natural position.

All types of inverted nipple correction should not affect the sensation of the nipples. They take approximately one to two hours for Dr. Rankin to complete.

Recovery after an inverted nipple correction can take up to a week. You can go back to work after a day or two. We recommend using over-the-counter NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to help with the discomfort that comes from having surgery, including some swelling and tenderness. We recommend light exercising but nothing too strenuous that may delay healing. You may return to intense exercise after two weeks.

Results after your recovery should include permanently projected nipples. You will see the results almost immediately.

A good candidate for nipple correction has nipples that are inverted with any grade of inversion. An ideal candidate should have realistic goals for inverted nipple correction and be generally healthy. You should not be currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
