Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck: Which is Better for Belly Fat?
While human bodies store fat in many places, the abdomen can be one of the most frustrating and hardest to address. Belly fat often holds on even when you lose weight or improve your muscle tone, affecting your figure and making it difficult to wear the clothes you want. Liposuction and a tummy tuck are two ways to eliminate this stubborn fat, but they are right for different people.
How to Get Rid of Belly Fat
Fat around your abdomen is not only easy to gain but very challenging to lose. Many people achieve an otherwise sculpted figure but feel like belly fat ruins that look. As a common problem for men and women, this fat accumulation can be reduced a bit with non-surgical means, but a surgical procedure will remove more fat and can help you achieve other goals.

Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck: Which is Better for Belly Fat?
If you are considering a procedure to get rid of your belly fat, you have options that include liposuction and a tummy tuck. Liposuction specifically targets fat removal, while a tummy tuck treats a broader range of concerns. Factors that will affect your choice include:
Amount of Loose Skin
Individuals who have been pregnant or have lost a lot of weight often have loose skin as well as stubborn fat in the abdominal area. Liposuction does not address loose skin, so it is ideal for those who have good skin elasticity and will see natural tightening after the procedure. A tummy tuck is appropriate for those who want to remove loose skin and correct other issues like separated muscles.
Size of Incision
In order to remove loose skin, a tummy tuck uses an incision across the lower abdomen from one side to the other. Liposuction, on the other hand, only uses a few small incisions to insert the cannula, and these are usually unnoticeable once healed.

Recovery Time
People generally experience some swelling and soreness after liposuction but return to work within five to seven days. You may be able to return to work about a week after a tummy tuck, but your activities will be limited for several weeks, and the area will take longer to heal completely.
Results
While the results of both procedures are visible immediately, you will have some swelling that prevents you from fully appreciating them. This swelling usually improves significantly within the first few weeks but can take a few months to disappear.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck or Liposuction?
During your consultation, Dr. Rankin will assess your abdominal area and decide which option is most likely to provide the results you want. Candidates for either procedure should be in good health and have realistic expectations. Ideal candidates are close to their overall body goals but want to target problems in the abdominal area.
