What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a “nose job,” is a cosmetic procedure that alters the nose’s appearance to balance the facial features and achieve harmonious proportions. These alterations can include size, shape, and the overall nose structure.

Dr. Rankin performs several types of rhinoplasty, including:

  • Male rhinoplasty, which requires an understanding of male facial anatomy
  • Ethnic rhinoplasty, which highlights and enhances your natural ethnic features
  • Revision rhinoplasty, which corrects the results of a previous procedure
  • Mohs reconstruction, which repairs the nose after removal of skin cancer

Although not a surgical procedure, a liquid rhinoplasty can also help you sculpt and shape your nose. Results are produced using dermal filler and neuromodulator injections.

Learn more about rhinoplasty

Dr. Rankin can perform rhinoplasty either “open” or “closed.” In an open procedure, a small incision is made across the columella – the skin between the nostrils. A closed procedure involves incisions inside the nose for even less scarring.

The procedure varies in length, but every procedure is unique. Typically, rhinoplasties take between three to four hours. A primary rhinoplasty, or the first nasal surgery, is typically shorter than a revision rhinoplasty.

At NorCal Plastic Surgery, we recommend all rhinoplasty surgeries take place in an accredited surgical facility with general anesthesia. Rhinoplasties are typically an outpatient procedure, but you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you overnight.

Almost anyone in good health can be an ideal candidate for rhinoplasty. The minimum age for having a rhinoplasty is roughly fifteen for girls and sixteen for boys because the nose’s shape, size, and structure need to mature before a rhinoplasty can be performed.

Only a consultation and examination can determine whether you are a candidate, so schedule your appointment today and find out whether rhinoplasty can sculpt the nose you want. Individuals seeking a revision procedure need to wait at least one year after their initial rhinoplasty to be good candidates.

How much rhinoplasty costs will depend on which type of procedure you want, your surgeon, and different fees. These fees can include the cost of the surgical center and anesthesiologist.

The cost of a typical rhinoplasty is between $17,000 to $19,000. Some rhinoplasties, such as rhinoplasties for functional purposes, can be covered under insurance because the procedure can improve breathing and the overall function of the nose.

We also offer several financing options to help individuals with a lower monthly payment. Please contact our practice by submitting your information to learn more.

Typically, downtime is one to two weeks after rhinoplasty surgery. There can be some swelling and bruising that migrates into the lower eyelids. You will have a small splint on your nose and one inside your nose for the first week. After the first week, a few small sutures will be removed.

You can enjoy the new shape of your nose when the splint is removed, and you will notice a gradual improvement in the shape and detail of the nose for up to a year after the procedure as swelling continues to decrease with time.

Because rhinoplasty usually changes the structure of your nose to reshape it, your changes can be expected to last a lifetime. While your facial features change over time, your nose will maintain its sculpted appearance. Your results will last as long as you avoid injury to your nose.

If you would like to change the shape or appearance of your nose without surgery, you might be a good candidate for a non-surgical or liquid rhinoplasty. During this procedure, dermal fillers are injected strategically into your nose to improve its shape and symmetry.

The shape of your nose can be a major part of your beautiful ethnic features, so if you want to make changes, you should choose a surgeon with extensive experience in ethnic rhinoplasty. This procedure preserves and enhances what makes you unique while still achieving the results you want.

When it comes to rhinoplasty, the skill and experience of your surgeon will determine the quality of your results. Dr. Rankin is a highly trained and meticulous surgeon who focuses on excellence. Unlike skin-only or cookie-cutter procedures, he uses his proven strategy to customize your results.
