What is the Difference Between Botox® and Dermal Fillers?

,

Injectables are a simple and effective treatment to reduce signs of aging on the face. Many injectables minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, while others add definition to facial features. Depending on what you want to address, Botox® or dermal fillers may be a good option for your facial rejuvenation treatment.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a trusted treatment using botulinum toxin to reduce signs of aging by relaxing specific facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. Botox® has been used for medical treatments of neurological disorders causing muscle weakness, migraines, and more.

In the cosmetic industry, Botox® is most commonly used to treat dynamic wrinkles around the eyes, eyebrows, forehead and neck bands. Final results appear within two weeks.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers are made of many different solutions, but hyaluronic acid is the most common. Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected under the skin, and they are commonly used to improve the face’s volume for anti-aging benefits. Dermal fillers can also enhance and define certain features, including the lips, cheeks, and jawline.

Dermal fillers treat smile lines, soften static wrinkles (not caused by muscles), and fill in lost volume on the face and hands. Results are immediate and will settle within two weeks.

What is the Difference Between Botox® and Dermal Fillers?

Despite both being injectables for facial rejuvenation, Botox® and dermal fillers are very different in their methods and various other aspects. Some of the main differences include:

How Long Results Last

Both Botox® and dermal fillers offer temporary results, but they vary in how long they last. Botox® typically lasts three to four months. For some people, results can last up to six months. Dermal fillers may last anywhere from four months to two years, depending on the type of filler. Hyaluronic-based dermal fillers usually last 6-12 months

Cost of Treatment

While Botox® and dermal filler treatments are usually similar in price, on average, Botox® injections are less expensive than dermal fillers. The cost of treatment will also depend on how much of the injectable is needed and what type of dermal filler is used.

Visual Outcome

Both options treat wrinkles but tend to treat different types of wrinkles and facial areas. Botox® may treat most areas of the face but most commonly is used to treat horizontal lines on the forehead, glabellar lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet around the eyes.

Dermal fillers typically fill in smile lines and other static wrinkles across the face. They also add volume under the skin and can be used to enhance certain features for a more harmonious facial appearance.

Amazing, friendly, knowledgeable staff! Dr Senekal was very professional and had an amazing bedside manner. I would recommend him to anyone looking at getting cataract/laser surgery. I came from Grande Prairie just to see him and his staff!
