SF Bay Area ProFractional™ Laser

There are several laser skin resurfacing treatments available, but the ProFractional™ laser has one of the most unique laser technologies. The ProFractional™ laser can treat several skin concerns while rejuvenating the skin for a more youthful appearance.

The ProFractional™ laser is a gentle treatment that helps improve targeted areas of the skin affected by age, scarring, or skin conditions. The ProFractional™ laser can visibly reduce the look of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, age spots, and sun damage. It is a customizable treatment that focuses on unique depth and precision so that even deep scars and wrinkles are reduced with greater sensitivity and control. 

At NorCal Plastic Surgery, we use the ProFractional™ laser as a deeper facial rejuvenation technique. It treats skin issues that can be challenging, such as stubborn acne and acne scarring. One of our staff will customize the treatment to best address your skin conditions. Customizable options include adjusting the depth of the laser’s penetration, the laser’s width, and the pattern used to treat facial areas.

The ProFractional™ laser uses fractional laser energy, which is a technique that only targets a fraction of the skin’s surface. The laser creates thin columns of thermal damage throughout the treated area, leaving the rest of the skin untouched and reducing downtime. 

This fractional laser energy is the erbium:YAG laser, a laser that targets the upper layer of the epidermis and heats deep within the dermis. Because the erbium:YAG laser from the ProFractional™ laser targets these layers of the skin, it helps rejuvenate the skin from the bottom up. 

After the skin is treated by the ProFractional™ laser, the body’s natural healing response leads to an increase in collagen and elastin production. These proteins help support the structure of the skin and add a bouncy youthfulness to the skin’s appearance.  

During, ProFractional™ laser session, we will cover your eyes to protect them from the laser. We will then use a numbing cream on your face to minimize any discomfort from the laser. We then start to pass the handheld device slowly over the treatment area. Depending on your customized treatment, the session can take up to thirty minutes to complete. 

You may still feel some discomfort during the session despite the numbing cream. Many patients describe the feeling as the light snapping of a rubber band or a slight heat sensation. 

There are several areas that the ProFractional™ laser can treat besides the face, including:

  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Hands
  • Arms
  • Legs

Because the ProFractional™ laser’s depth is customizable, healing time will depend on how deep your treatment is. Lighter treatments generally take four to five days to recover from, while deeper treatments may take a week or more. The recovery time that your skin requires truly depends on your unique healing response. During your recovery time, collagen production will be boosted by the laser, and results will gradually improve as collagen increases. 

We recommend you apply gentler skin care products to soothe the skin during your healing process. Having a simple skin care routine and applying sunscreen to reduce sun damage can help prolong your results. 

While a deeper treatment can sound intimidating because of the slightly longer recovery time, having the laser target the skin more deeply can lead to more sustainable and optimal results. Regardless, you may need a few sessions to achieve your desired goals.

Good candidates for the ProFractional™ laser are lighter-skinned individuals with signs of sun damage and/or skin concerns such as finer wrinkles or acne scarring. We recommend that medium to deeper-skinned individuals do not have ProFractional™ laser treatments because there is a risk that the laser will damage your skin pigment.

  • How many treatment sessions are needed for optimal results
