How Long Does Botox® Last?

Your facial expressions help make you unique but can also cause fine lines and wrinkles. Treat these expression lines with Botox®, a neuromodulator that relaxes facial muscles. This injectable treatment takes minutes and requires minimal downtime.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is an injectable version of botulinum toxin. This toxin, also known as a neuromodulator, acts on nerves to relax facial muscles. Botox® stabilizes botulinum toxin with a protein that helps it work. When injected, Botox® stops facial muscles from contracting. As a result, the muscles stop pulling and creasing your skin, leaving the area looking smooth and relaxed. Botox® is used to treat forehead lines, vertical lines between the brows (frown lines), and crow’s feet.

How Does Botox® Work?

When injected, Botox® reaches your facial nerves and tells them to stop releasing a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Without this signal, your facial muscles stop contracting, and your fine lines disappear. These neuromodulator effects are temporary, and Botox® wears off with no lasting effects on nerves or muscles.

How Long Does Botox® Last?

You may start to see Botox® results after a few days, with full results after seven to ten days. Botox® lasts three to four months for most people. It may last up to six months, especially if you have been having Botox® for a while and your muscles are used to being relaxed. Results fade gradually, and we will schedule touch-ups based on how your body processes the botulinum toxin.

Is There Any Downtime After Botox®?

You can resume most of your usual activities after Botox®. You should avoid lying down or rubbing your face for four hours. Wait until the next day to resume strenuous activities. You may notice some redness or spots of bruising after your injections. These will fade within a few days. We will instruct you on some ways to minimize the likelihood of bruising.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®?

Most people make good candidates for Botox®. It has many medical and aesthetic uses. You may be a good candidate if you want to treat expression lines and wrinkles with injections instead of surgery. You should not have Botox® if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a skin infection in the treatment area.
