How Long is Recovery After Rhinoplasty?

Since your nose is the central feature of your face, feeling unsatisfied with its appearance can have a powerful impact on your confidence. You can love the shape, size, and contours of your nose with rhinoplasty. This procedure reshapes your nose to create an aesthetically pleasing shape that balances your facial features for a naturally sculpted look.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Whether you call it rhinoplasty or a “nose job,” this procedure is one of the most popular aesthetic surgeries in the world. The visibility of the nose and the wide variety of shapes and sizes leads to many people feeling frustrated with a nose that does not seem to suit their features, is asymmetrical, or otherwise makes them unhappy. Rhinoplasty corrects a wide range of issues to provide you with the nose you have always wanted.

How Does Rhinoplasty Work?

Dr. Rankin performs rhinoplasty under general anesthesia in our accredited surgical facility. Depending on your needs, he may perform a closed rhinoplasty, which uses incisions hidden inside the nose, or an open rhinoplasty, which uses a small incision between the nostrils. An open procedure is often needed for more significant changes. Dr. Rankin will discuss what you can expect during and after your procedure.

How Long is Recovery After Rhinoplasty?

You can expect that your nose and sometimes the area under your eyes will look bruised and swollen after surgery. Most people can resume light-activity jobs and activities in one to two weeks. You will have splints inside and outside your nose after your procedure, and we will remove these during your follow-up visits.

You can resume most of your usual activities, including exercise, after about four weeks. However, avoid activities that could cause trauma to your nose. Most people can resume all activities in six to eight weeks. Following your surgical team’s instructions will help ensure a smooth recovery and the best possible results.

What Results Will I See After Rhinoplasty?

You will see a difference in your nose as soon as the splints are removed. However, swelling will affect how your results look. Swelling will fade significantly after a few weeks, but your full results will continue to evolve for up to a year. Once established, you can expect your new appearance to last a lifetime.

Rhinoplasty results can last a lifetime, although some people have a revision rhinoplasty in the future. Dr. Rankin often performs this procedure for people who are unhappy with the results of a previous rhinoplasty. He also specializes in achieving facial balance by combining rhinoplasty with a procedure such as chin augmentation

Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

If you have been bothered by your nose for as long as you can remember and want to see changes, rhinoplasty might be right for you. Candidates for this procedure are in good health and have reasonable expectations. You should not have this procedure if you have certain medical conditions.

In addition to traditional rhinoplasty, you may be a candidate for corrective rhinoplasty to restore your nose after trauma or cancer surgery. Discuss all your concerns during your consultation, so your NorCal Plastic Surgery team can design a treatment plan to address them.
