What is Breast Augmentation?

Many women are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts and consequently don’t feel as confident in themselves. Breast augmentation can be a beneficial way for women to feel more confident and comfortable in their appearance.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement or augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery that enhances the size, shape, and volume of breasts. This popular cosmetic procedure may be done to enlarge naturally small breasts or restore volume lost with age or childbirth. Breast augmentation can be used to address:

  • Small breasts or asymmetrical breasts
  • Breasts that have lost volume due to weight loss, pregnancy, or aging
  • Breasts that have a droopy or saggy appearance

At NorCal Plastic Surgery, Dr. Rankin performs breast augmentation as an outpatient procedure with a local anesthetic. He proudly serves the San Francisco Bay Area and Marin County. Incisions are typically made under the breast, around the areola, or under the armpit. Recovery time varies depending on the individual, but most patients can return to work within a week and resume exercise in two to four weeks.

What are My Options for Breast Augmentation?

Dr. Rankin performs two types of breast augmentation, depending on your goals and needs.

Breast Implants

The most common form of breast augmentation is with implants. Breast augmentation with implants involves the insertion of saline or silicone implants to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. NorCal Plastic Surgery uses gummy bear implants. These smooth, round implants are among the safest and most common options.

Fat Transfer (Natural Breast Augmentation)

Dr. Rankin also offers a more natural breast augmentation using fat transfer. In this procedure, liposuction is used to remove unwanted fat from another part of the body, often the flanks or belly, and transfer it to the breasts.

Many women prefer the subtle and natural-looking results of fat transfer breast augmentation. This method comes with minimal scarring and has the added benefit of slimming stubborn fat in your belly, flanks, or thighs. However, natural breast augmentation typically can’t provide as significant of a size increase as breast implants.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation can provide many benefits for women unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts. Some of the benefits of breast augmentation include:

  • Enhanced breast size and shape
  • Restored volume after breastfeeding or age-related volume loss
  • Long-lasting or even lifelong results
  • Improved breast symmetry and body proportion

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
