How Does a Breast Lift Work?

Have your breasts started to droop with age or childbirth? Sagging breasts is a common concern, but a breast lift can restore your youthful figure. At NorCal Plastic Surgery, Dr. Rankin helps women throughout Marin County and the San Francisco Bay area enhance their figures with this procedure.

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that lifts and reshapes sagging breasts. Women often struggle with droopy breasts due to factors such as aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or genetics.

A breast lift can also correct the nipple and areola position, which may have shifted downward with sagging breasts. Some women have their procedure combined with breast augmentation or breast reduction to further enhance the size and shape of their breasts.

How Does a Breast Lift Work?

A breast lift procedure involves making incisions on the breast to remove excess skin and reshape the breast tissue. The extent of incisions depends on the severity of sagging, breast size, and the desired breast shape.

For significant sagging, Dr. Rankin may use an anchor incision around the areola, vertically down the breast, and along the breast crease. Women with mild or moderate sagging may only need a lollipop incision around the areola and vertically down the breast or a donut incision around the areola only.

After the incisions are made, Dr. Rankin will lift and reshape the breast tissue, reposition the nipple and areola, and remove any excess skin. The incisions are then closed with sutures.

Breast Lift Recovery and Results

You can expect some bruising, swelling, and discomfort after your breast lift. Most patients can return to work within a week after the surgery, but you should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for six weeks or more.

The results of a breast lift are immediately noticeable, but the final results may take several weeks or months to fully manifest. The breasts will appear firmer, lifted, and more youthful. The results of a breast lift are long-lasting, but factors such as aging, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy can affect the results over time.
