How Does a Nose Job (Rhinoplasty) Work?

As the central feature of your face, your nose can bother you if it doesn’t suit your features. Rhinoplasty adjusts your nose’s shape, structure, or size to create facial balance. Dr. Rankin and his team specialize in this procedure and provide natural-looking, harmonious results. In the hands of a skilled surgeon, rhinoplasty can dramatically improve your confidence.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, or a “nose job,” is a procedure to correct concerns about the appearance of your nose. This procedure can address issues including size, width, nostril shape, bumps, and crookedness. It can also correct functional issues such as a deviated septum that affect your breathing. Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, and Dr. Rankin excels at providing balanced, aesthetically pleasing results.

How Does Rhinoplasty Work?

Rhinoplasty usually takes place under general anesthesia. Dr. Rankin can perform an open or closed rhinoplasty depending on your needs. A closed rhinoplasty makes all its incisions inside the nose for no external scars. An open rhinoplasty uses a small incision between the nostrils. An open rhinoplasty gives your surgeon more access to the structures of your nose and is used for procedures that involve more significant reshaping.

Dr. Rankin may reshape nasal bones and cartilage as needed during your procedure to create the desired appearance. In a cosmetic rhinoplasty, he performs the procedure to improve your aesthetic appearance. A functional rhinoplasty addresses problems with your nose that affect your breathing. The most common type of functional rhinoplasty corrects a deviated septum (the dividing tissue between the nostrils).

What is Recovery Like After Rhinoplasty?

You can expect to have some bruising and swelling after your rhinoplasty. You will have a splint supporting your nose that will be removed after a week. Dr. Rankin will prescribe medication as necessary. Most people can return to non-active jobs within one week. You can resume most physical activities in four weeks. Your nose will continue to heal and improve for up to a year after surgery.

Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Rankin will emphasize the importance of reasonable expectations when discussing your rhinoplasty plans. Good candidates should have no major health problems and achievable goals. Candidates may desire rhinoplasty for functional or aesthetic purposes. Only a consultation can determine whether you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty.

What Types of Rhinoplasty are Available?

Dr. Rankin performs several types of rhinoplasty that other providers may not. Male rhinoplasty presents a challenge since men usually have different aesthetic goals than women. Ethnic rhinoplasty achieves your desired appearance while respecting and enhancing your culturally unique features. Revision rhinoplasty corrects or improves the results of a previous procedure. If you have unusual rhinoplasty needs, see an expert like Dr. Rankin with experience in managing these challenges.
