Traveling for surgery requires careful planning. Our team at NorCal Plastic Surgery is dedicated to helping you throughout your transformation journey. We’ll provide the information and resources to ensure smooth, successful surgery and recovery. Below is a comprehensive guide for planning your trip to the San Francisco Bay Area and what to expect during and after your procedure.
Consultation and Planning
The first step of any treatment at NorCal Plastic Surgery is a consultation with Dr. Rankin to discuss your goals, medical history, and questions. For out-of-town patients, this may be a virtual consultation. We may ask you to send us photos of the area of concern.
For out-of-town patients, we recommend scheduling your surgery date well in advance to give yourself plenty of time for planning and preparation.
Travel Arrangements
With your surgery date scheduled, book your transportation and accommodation to visit Marin County. NorCal Plastic Surgery serves patients with locations in Tiburon, Walnut Creek, and Tiburon, CA.
If possible, we recommend arriving a day or two before your surgery so you can acclimate to the area and meet with Dr. Rankin for a final consultation. This is also a great time to fit in some sightseeing. One of the benefits of medical tourism at our new Tiburon, CA, location is enjoying the beautiful scenery and atmosphere! Check out DestinationTiburon.org for things to do and see during your stay.
Pre-operative Instructions
During the consultation, Dr. Rankin and our team will provide pre-operative instructions. For a few days before your surgery, you may need to adjust your medications, diet, or skincare routine. Following these pre-op instructions is essential for optimal safety and results.
You will need an adult to accompany you during your surgery and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours after the procedure. If you travel alone, we can arrange for a nurse to care for you during your recovery.
Immediate Post-Operative Period
Immediately after surgery, you’ll spend some time in a recovery area in our clinic. This is usually brief, depending on the extent of your procedure, and you can expect to be on your way in a few hours. We will provide any necessary post-operative instructions, medication, and supplies.
Recovery Accommodations
When selecting a place to stay during your visit, choose somewhere comfortable, clean, and conveniently located to our office. You may want to consider renting a recovery suite. Make sure your accommodations have amenities like elevators, room service, and comfortable bedding for your recovery.
We highly recommend the Waters Edge Hotel for patients visiting Tiburon. With stunning views of the San Francisco Bay, it offers a luxurious and comfortable retreat as you undergo your surgery and recovery. Here are some of the reasons we recommend Waters Edge Hotel:

Follow-up Appointments
Dr. Rankin will discuss how many follow-up appointments you’ll need and when to schedule them. You will most likely need a follow-up within the first week after surgery. These appointments are crucial for monitoring your progress and addressing any questions. Dr. Rankin may also remove drains or stitches at this time.
We typically recommend staying in town for about ten days following most surgeries, but your stay may be shorter or longer, depending on the unique procedure.
Rest, Aftercare, and Activity
As part of your aftercare instructions, Dr. Rankin will discuss any activity instructions, which may include avoiding strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and certain movements that could strain your surgical site. You should allow yourself plenty of time to rest and recuperate, listening to your body’s cues for when to rest and when to gently increase activity levels.
Take prescribed pain medications as directed to manage discomfort. We may also recommend using ice packs or cold compresses to reduce swelling. Dr. Rankin will provide detailed instructions for your post-operative care.
A healthy diet is also important for supporting your body’s healing process. Get plenty of nutrients and stay hydrated before and after surgery. Delicious, healthful food is easy to come by, with multiple popular restaurants nearby. For patients staying at the Waters Edge Hotel, the tasty nutrition you need can be found just next door at the Bungalow Kitchen by Michael Mina, Malibu Farm Tiburon, and more.
While you recuperate, don’t forget to do a little sightseeing. The downtown Tiburon ferry terminal gives you convenient access to San Francisco or Angel Island, just a short walk from your hotel.
Finally, don’t overlook your emotional support and recovery. Give yourself time to process your emotions and adjust to your new appearance. Lean on your support system, such as friends and family, for encouragement during your journey.
Gradual Return to Normal Activities
Slowly reintroduce activities and exercise routines as advised by Dr. Rankin, gradually increasing intensity and duration over time. Be patient with yourself and prioritize self-care as you continue to heal and regain strength.
Long-term Follow-up
Continue attending follow-up appointments with Dr. Rankin as recommended to monitor your long-term healing and outcomes. These may be virtual appointments after you travel home. Maintain open communication with Dr. Rankin regarding any concerns or changes you may experience over time. Our team is here for questions and concerns every step of the way.
