Liposuction in the San Francisco Bay Area
When the Concern Is Proportion, Not Weight
Sometimes the issue is not weight. It is proportion.
A pocket beneath the chin, fullness at the waist, or heaviness through the thighs may remain even when the rest of the body responds to nutrition and exercise. Liposuction selectively reduces these areas so the surrounding contours relate more naturally.
At NorCal Plastic Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Timothy Rankin plans liposuction around the entire silhouette, not a collection of isolated treatment zones. The objective is measured refinement, with close attention to skin quality, balance, and the transitions between treated and untreated areas.
Consultations are available in Tiburon for patients throughout Marin County and the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical body-contouring procedure that removes selected subcutaneous fat, the layer between the skin and muscle. Dr. Rankin introduces a narrow tube called a cannula through small incisions and uses it to remove fat while shaping the surrounding area.
The procedure is intended to improve contour, not produce substantial weight loss. It does not remove visceral fat around the internal organs, repair separated abdominal muscles, reliably treat cellulite, or remove significant loose skin.
What Areas Can Liposuction Treat?
Liposuction may refine localized fat in the:
- Abdomen and waist
- Flanks and back
- Hips and thighs
- Knees
- Upper arms
- Chest
- Chin and neck
- Buttocks and surrounding contours
Several areas may be treated during one operation when the combined plan remains appropriate for the patient's health and recovery. Treating more areas is not automatically better. A coherent result depends on knowing where to reduce volume, where to preserve it, and how each area contributes to the overall shape.
What Can Liposuction Realistically Change?
Liposuction is most effective when localized fat is the primary concern and the overlying skin has enough elasticity to adapt to the reduced volume. It may create cleaner lines and better proportion, but it cannot promise tight skin or a perfectly smooth surface.
When skin is already loose, removing the volume beneath it may make laxity or rippling more visible. Depending on the examination, Dr. Rankin may recommend:
- Renuvion® for selected mild to moderate skin laxity
- A tummy tuck when excess abdominal skin or muscle separation is present
- An arm lift or another skin-removal procedure for more substantial laxity
- Further weight stabilization before surgery
NorCal Plastic Surgery calls the combination of liposuction and Renuvion LipoTyte™. This approach addresses localized fat and limited skin laxity during the same procedure. It is not a substitute for removing significant excess skin.
Liposuction or Tummy Tuck?
Liposuction removes fat. A tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin and may repair separated muscles. The procedures solve different problems and are sometimes combined.
Liposuction alone may be appropriate when abdominal fullness comes primarily from fat beneath elastic skin. A tummy tuck may be more effective when pregnancy, aging, or weight change has left loose skin, a lower abdominal fold, or diastasis recti.
Neither procedure removes visceral fat inside the abdomen. Dr. Rankin examines the fat layer, skin, abdominal wall, scars, and waistline before recommending the least extensive operation likely to produce a meaningful improvement.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
A good candidate is generally a healthy adult with localized fat, a stable weight, and specific expectations about contour rather than weight loss. Firm, elastic skin is favorable because it is more likely to adapt smoothly after volume is removed.
The consultation also considers:
- Medical history and current medications
- Smoking, vaping, and nicotine use
- Previous surgery and existing scars
- Skin quality in each proposed area
- Future pregnancy or weight-loss plans
- The number and size of treatment areas
- Recovery support at home
- The safety of combining procedures
Liposuction may not be appropriate when the desired result depends on major weight loss, substantial skin removal, correction of abdominal muscle separation, or treatment of visceral fat.
How Does Dr. Rankin Perform Liposuction?
Before surgery, Dr. Rankin evaluates the proposed areas from multiple angles and marks the contours to be refined. During the operation, he introduces a cannula through small, strategically placed incisions and removes selected fat from the layer beneath the skin.
This is a three-dimensional process. Excessive removal can create depressions, while abrupt transitions can produce visible irregularities. The goal is not the maximum amount of fat that can be removed. It is the amount that improves proportion while preserving smoothness and respecting the skin.
NorCal Plastic Surgery uses general anesthesia for liposuction. Dr. Rankin performs surgery at accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anesthesiologists. The procedure is typically outpatient, and patients generally return home with a responsible adult after postoperative monitoring.
When liposuction is part of fat transfer to the breast or another planned fat-grafting procedure, selected fat may be processed for placement elsewhere. Graft survival varies, and not all removed fat is suitable for transfer.
What Is Recovery Like?
Swelling, bruising, soreness, firmness, and temporary numbness are common during early recovery. Treated areas may initially look uneven or feel harder than expected as swelling resolves and the tissues settle.
A compression garment is generally worn according to Dr. Rankin's instructions. It supports the tissues and helps manage swelling, but it should not create excessive pressure or deep folds.
Light walking begins early according to the postoperative plan. Exercise, heavy lifting, and pressure on treated areas must wait. Some patients return to nonphysical work within approximately one week, while larger or combined procedures require more time.
Recovery is not identical for every area or patient. NorCal Plastic Surgery's liposuction recovery guide can help with preparation, but the instructions provided for the actual operation take priority.
When Will I See the Final Result?
An initial difference may be visible after surgery, but swelling temporarily obscures definition. The contour becomes clearer over the following weeks and months as inflammation subsides and the tissues soften.
One side may settle faster than the other. Larger treatment areas and combined procedures generally require more time to refine.
Patients preparing for a wedding, vacation, photography session, or another important event should allow several months rather than scheduling surgery close to the date. Results vary with anatomy, skin elasticity, healing, and weight stability.
Are Liposuction Results Permanent?
The fat cells removed during liposuction do not grow back. Remaining cells can still enlarge, however, and significant weight gain may alter treated and untreated areas.
Liposuction does not change appetite, metabolism, or the body's tendency to gain weight. Pregnancy, aging, hormonal changes, and weight fluctuations may also affect the contour.
A relatively stable weight helps preserve the result. Patients actively pursuing substantial weight loss are usually better served by reaching a maintainable weight before surgery.
What Are the Risks?
Possible risks include bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, blood clots, anesthesia complications, delayed healing, persistent swelling, changes in sensation, visible scars, asymmetry, contour irregularities, skin discoloration, loose or rippled skin, injury to deeper structures, and revision surgery.
Using an energy-based device adds risks such as burns or thermal injury. Treating large volumes or combining several operations may increase physiologic stress and complication risk.
No technique eliminates the possibility of unevenness, and revision cannot guarantee perfect correction. Dr. Rankin will discuss risks specific to the treatment area, planned volume, technology, medical history, and proposed combination of procedures.
Shortness of breath, chest pain, one-sided leg swelling, fever, worsening redness, severe pain, or heavy bleeding requires prompt medical attention. Emergency symptoms require immediate care.
Why Choose Dr. Timothy Rankin?
The quality of liposuction depends less on how much fat is removed than on where the surgeon stops. Good contouring requires judgment about skin behavior, anatomy, symmetry, and the relationship between neighboring areas.
Dr. Rankin is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He completed a full general surgery residency at the University of Arizona, where he served as chief resident, followed by plastic surgery training at Vanderbilt University. His training included body contouring and breast surgery.
His recommendations are proportion-led rather than procedure-led. Dr. Rankin may suggest liposuction alone, combine it with an appropriate body-contouring procedure, or advise against treatment when the skin, anatomy, or anticipated weight change makes another approach more responsible.
Frequently Asked Questions About Liposuction
How much weight will I lose?
Liposuction is not intended to produce meaningful weight loss. Its value is measured through contour, proportion, and clothing fit rather than pounds. The amount of fat that can be removed safely depends on health, anatomy, treatment extent, and whether other procedures are performed.
Can liposuction tighten loose skin?
Only to a limited and unpredictable degree. Skin with good elasticity may contract after fat removal, but liposuction does not remove excess skin. Renuvion may be considered for selected cases of limited laxity, while significant looseness usually requires a skin-removal procedure.
Does liposuction remove all types of belly fat?
No. Liposuction removes subcutaneous abdominal fat beneath the skin. It cannot remove visceral fat around the internal organs or repair separated abdominal muscles. If abdominal prominence comes primarily from visceral fat, loose skin, or diastasis recti, another strategy may be more appropriate.
Does liposuction eliminate cellulite?
No. Cellulite involves fibrous bands, skin structure, fat distribution, and anatomy. Liposuction is not a reliable cellulite treatment and may make dimpling more noticeable when skin elasticity is poor.
Will liposuction leave scars?
Yes, although the incisions are small and placed discreetly when anatomy allows. Visibility depends on incision location, skin type, healing, sun exposure, and individual scar formation. Scars generally soften and fade but do not disappear completely.
Can the fat come back?
Removed fat cells do not regenerate, but remaining cells can enlarge with weight gain. New disproportion may develop in treated or untreated areas. Stable weight is therefore important to maintaining the result.
How much does liposuction cost?
Cost depends on the areas treated, surgical complexity, anesthesia, facility fees, garments, and whether another procedure is included. An examination is required for an individualized quote. Cosmetic liposuction is generally not covered by insurance, but financing resources are available.
Can liposuction be combined with another procedure?
Yes. It may be combined with a tummy tuck, mommy makeover, Renuvion, or fat transfer when the overall plan remains medically appropriate. Dr. Rankin considers operating time, recovery burden, and cumulative risk before recommending combined surgery.
Request a Liposuction Consultation
A useful consultation should determine whether the concern is excess fat, how the skin is likely to respond, and which treatment will produce the most coherent result. Dr. Rankin will evaluate the proposed areas, explain the limits and risks, and plan around the body as a whole.
